Accessible Art for All werden in fünf europäischen Städten durchgeführt: Rom (Italien), Leicester (UK), Hamburg (Deutschland), Kristianstad (Schweden) und Sofia (Bulgarien).

International Call:

Artistic Design of Public Toilets

STAMPis looking for individual artists or artistic teams for the artistic transformation of public toilets. The objective is creative design and installation reflecting European affiliation, the values of the EU and transnational mobility, dealing with the significance of joint European history, values and advantages, which are represented by the best-known European programme and symbol of a whole generation – Erasmus.

1STAMP is a festival of altonale and the district cultural centre HausDrei in the district of Hamburg-Altona.

Background

This call is part of the initiative AAA. Accessible Art for All, which aims at hightening the awareness of important messages for the future of the European community through art and culture: from climate change and ecological sustainability to the significance of being part of the EU and a society that should always stand against mobbing and discrimination, but includes migrants and refugees. Each of the five partner institutions of this initiative focuses on one of these topics.

The initiative and this call want to take these topics by means of artistic pro-cesses to places that are used by everyone: toilets. At the same time the visibility of toilets in public space is to be raised.

Projects of the initiative AAA. Accessible Art for Allare implemented in five European cities: Rome (Italy), Leicester (UK), Hamburg (Germany), Kristianstad (Sweden) and Sofia (Bulgaria). This project is financed by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.

Procedure

Five jurors from Hamburg will pick submissions of individual artists or artistic teams for four public toilets. The selected artists will realize their ideas between May and September 2021. According to the date of realization, they and their works will be presented during one or both festivals: altonale digital June 3-13 2021 / altonale September 2-19 2021. After the festivals the works will remain in situ.

These artists will also conduct online or live workshops in Hamburg – time and scope being subject to agreement between STAMPand the artists. Styles and themes are up to the artists, but shall be connected to the realized work.

In order to share digital versions of the works online, they will be fotographed by 360° technique. This will add to the artists’ portfolios on national and European levels and give them visibility (being uploaded on an international digital platform).

If the prevailing Covid conditions allow, the artists will be given the opportunity to participate in the festivals of the partner institutions, so that they can get into contact and communication with other European artists and institutions.

We offer the selected individual artists or artistic teams:

  • fee and materials budget, as agreed by altonale/STAMPfestivals and the artists, according to the amount of work, time and materials required
  • cost absorbtion for travelling and accomodation expenses for non-local artists
  • European visibility of works and artists through digital presentation by the European partner institutions in a shared portfolio
  • the chance to participate in the four festivals of the partner institutions (the current Covid situation does not yet allow for fixed dates, it is also not known if international travel will then be possible)

Places to be transformed:

  • site 1: toilet in Fischers Park, 22763 Hamburg (outside only)
  • site 2: urinal at Alma-Wartenberg-Platz, 22765 Hamburg (inside and outside possible)
